Cleaning FAQ

Keeping your precious stones and metals free from soaps, hand lotions, cosmetics and skin oils is the first step in ensuring their lasting beauty. Rings seem particularly prone to filming behind the stones and inside the mountings, but all jewelry needs to be kept clean for a lifetime of wear.

• Natural and Cultured Pearls
  Always apply make-up, hair spray and perfume before wearing your pearls. Store pearls in a chamois bag or acid-free tissue paper. Clean your pearl rings and earrings in Reflections jewelry cleaner, then rinse and dry. Be aware that prolonged soaking may loosen the glues used in your pearl jewelry. Never immerse a strand of pearls into jewelry cleaner, but clean thoroughly each time you wear them. Barely dampen a soft cloth with water and Reflections jewelry cleaner and wipe the strand to rid it of perspiration, makeup and dry cleaning fluids. Then use another cloth dampened with plain water to gently wipe several times to remove any residue.
• Diamonds, Transparent and other Gemstones
  Soak the stones in Reflections Jewelry Cleaner and use a soft brush to scrub behind the stone. When finished, just rinse with water and dry. Be careful, though, as even the hardest gems sometimes have inclusions that weaken the stone.
• Opal, Coral and Other Gemstones
  Never use a sonic type machine to clean these stones, or wear them during vigorous activities, as they are easily chipped or shattered. To clean organic gems such as coral, quickly dip in Reflections jewelry cleaner, rinse and wipe dry with a soft cloth. Organic gems are soft and porous and will absorb cosmetics, perfume, and hairspray, possibly ruining the gem over time. Opaque gemstones like malachite, turquoise and lapis should be cleaned less frequently, as they are porous, like rocks, and may discolor over time.
• Sterling Silver, Gold, Platinum
  For tarnish and oxidation, use Reflections Tarnish Remover. Then use Reflections Jewelry Cleaner, rinse and polish with a soft cloth. Store silver in a cool, dry place in bags lined with tarnish preventive cloth. Or store silver wrapped in felt or flannel. Wrapping the pieces individually to store them prevents scratches. Do not expose silver to light, plastic or air during storage.
